The banking sector is a pillar of the world’s economic fabric and is today facing a major revolution due to the demands of sustainable development objectives and the evolution of sustainable finance tools. This article analyses the impact of green credit on commercial banks’ performance based on data from 10 commercial banks in China between 2012 and 2022. The study found that in the short term, the implementation of green credit has a positive effect on the income level of commercial banks’ intermediate activities and a moderating effect on their return on total assets and non-performing loan ratio.
This study analyzes the influence of five primary factors—inflation, capital ratio, deposits, non-performing loans, and bank size—on the performance of banks in Vietnam. Our sample encompasses 26 commercial banks from 2014 to 2023. The analysis incorporates data sourced from commercial banks’ financial statements and annual reports. Our findings indicate that banks with higher capital ratios and sizes generally exhibit superior performance. Moreover, inflation positively influences the performance of Vietnamese commercial banks throughout the selected timeframe. In contrast, non-performing loans and deposits are inverse to bank performance. Our findings offer novel insights into the factors influencing bank performance in a growing economy like Vietnam, along with recommendations for Vietnamese commercial banks and the State Bank of Vietnam to implement effective methods to improve bank performance.
ESG (environmental, social and governance, a framework used to assess an organisation’s business practices and performance on various sustainability and ethical issues) and Digital Transformation (the process of using digital technologies to change a business’s operations, products and services by integrating digital solutions into all areas of the business, which can lead to cultural and technological changes) are emerging issues across different industries, including the banking field. There has been limited research focusing on exploring the linkages between ESG, Digital Transformation and Customer Behaviour in the banking area, especially within developing countries such as Vietnam. Based on this gap, this study analyses and assesses the role of Digital Transformation and ESG on customer behaviour towards brands in the banking sector in Ho Chi Minh City. The research employed the quantitative research methods with the combination of fundamental analytical methods such as statistics, Cronbach’s alpha reliability, Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA), measurement models and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM). The analysis was based on survey data from 550 customers who are the commercial banks’ current customers and live in Ho Chi Minh City, yielding 514 valid responses. Using SPSS and SMART PLS software, the study provided notable results. Specifically: (1) The component factors of ESG, including Environmental Issues (EN), Social Issues (SO), Government Issues (GO) and Digital Transformation (DT), positively influence Customer Behaviour (CB); (2) The component factors of ESG, including Environmental Issues (EN), Social Issues (SO) and Government Issues (GO), play a mediating role in the relationship between Digital Transformation (DT) and Customer Behaviour (CB).
This article measures the performance of listed commercial banks in Vietnam and identifies factors influencing their efficiency. The study follows a two-stage approach: (i) In the first stage, scale efficiency scores from 2016 to 2022 are assessed using the Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) method; (ii) In the second stage, Tobit regression analyzes internal factors, macroeconomic conditions, and the impact of Covid-19. Key findings show that internal factors such as return on assets positively affect efficiency, while the ratio of equity to total capital has a negative and statistically significant impact. Bank size positively influences efficiency scores. Macroeconomic factors, including economic growth and inflation, were statistically insignificant. However, the Covid-19 pandemic had a significant negative effect on bank efficiency.
The objective of this paper is to assess the influence of various types of crises, including the Subprime, COVID-19, and political crises, on corporate governance attributes, regulations, and the association with bank risk. The consecutive occurrences of crises have significantly impacted the global economy, causing substantial disruptions across various facets of the international banking system. Our hypothesis posits that these crises not only influence governance characteristics and regulations but also impact their correlation with the risk and financial distress experienced by banks. Our study is conducted within the Tunisian context spanning from 2000 to 2021, utilizing a GMM regression on a dataset comprising 221 bank-year observations. Our findings indicate that crises have a discernible effect on the relationship between corporate governance and bank risk, as well as between regulation and bank risk. Our results are strong in a range of sensitivity checks, including the use of alternative proxies to measure the bank risks and corporate governance metrics.
This study explores the pivotal factors influencing the adoption of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) in the banking sector of Vietnam, focusing on the perceptions of its benefits, the competence of accountants, the involvement of managers, and the guidance from the accounting and auditing community. Employing Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) on data collected from 236 professionals across accounting, auditing, banking, and finance, the research reveals that the perceived benefits of IFRS, active managerial participation, and advice from the accounting-auditing community significantly encourage the adoption of IFRS within Vietnamese commercial banks. Interestingly, the competence of accountants was not identified as a significant determinant. These findings suggest a nuanced landscape of IFRS adoption, emphasizing the importance of managerial support and community guidance over individual accountant competence. The study contributes to the broader discourse on IFRS adoption, offering actionable insights for banks, policymakers, and potentially applicable strategies for firms in Vietnam or similarly positioned economies on the path to IFRS compliance.
