This study examines the compliance between the accounting standard for Property, Plant and Equipment (PPE) and accountants’ practices in terms of disclosure and measurement, in order to determine its levels and drivers. Based on the assumption that a higher level of compliance is associated with a higher quality of the accounting information system, compliance indices are proposed and econometric regressions are used to analyze the determinants of this accounting compliance for Portuguese firms. The empirical evidence shows that compliance is not high, and that it tends to be higher for disclosing rather than for measuring. Moreover, the results suggest that firm size has a positive impact on compliance, both for measurement and disclosure, consistent with larger firms being subject to greater scrutiny. Liquidity, on the other hand, tends to have a negative effect on compliance, as more liquid firms are less dependent on external financing. Furthermore, while leverage tends to have a positive effect on measurement compliance, profitability has no effect on accounting compliance. Therefore, this study adds evidence straight from the perceptions of practitioners who interpret and apply accounting standards and then influence the quality of financial reporting, providing valuable insights that have the potential to affect confidence in firms.
This study investigates the relationship between the disclosure of historical tourism information by local governments and tourism performance in Indonesia. Employing a quantitative research design, data were collected from 152 respondents, including local government officials, tourism stakeholders, and community members, using a purposive sampling method. This approach ensured the inclusion of participants with direct knowledge and involvement in historical tourism activities. Data analysis was conducted using IBM SPSS software, utilizing descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple regression analysis to examine the relationships between variables. The results indicate that effective disclosure practices positively impact tourism performance, with key factors including the involvement of regional heads, legislative councils, mass media, tourism business actors, investment value, tourism budgets, and grant expenditures. The study highlights the importance of transparency and comprehensive information dissemination in enhancing tourism performance. Future research should explore the role of digitalization and innovative technologies in improving historical tourism disclosure and performance. These findings have significant implications for policymakers and practitioners in the tourism sector, emphasizing the need for robust disclosure practices to foster tourism development and economic growth.
This study investigates the influence of Environmental, Social, and Governance Disclosures (ESGD) on the profitability of firms, using a sample of 385 publicly listed companies on the Thai Stock Exchange. Data from 2018 to 2022 is sourced from the Bloomberg database, focusing on ESGD scores as indicators of companies’ ESG commitments. The study utilizes a structural equation model to examine the relationships between independent variables; ESGD, Earnings Per Share (EPS), Debt to Assets ratio (DA), Return on Investment Capital (ROIC), Total Assets (TA), and dependent variables Tobin’s Q (TBQ) and Return on Assets (ROA). The analysis reveals a positive relationship between ESGD and TBQ, but not with ROA. Further exploration is conducted to determine if different ESGD levels (high, medium, low) yield consistent effects on TBQ. The findings indicate discrepancies: high and medium ESGD levels are associated with a negative impact on TBQ when EPS increased, whereas low ESGD levels correlate with an increase in TBQ with rising EPS. This nuanced approach challenges the conventional uniform treatment of ESGD in previous research and provides a deeper understanding of how varying commitments to ESG practices affect a firm’s market valuation and profitability. These insights are crucial for firm management, highlighting the importance of ESGD in relation to other financial variables and their effects on market value. This study offers a new perspective on ESGD’s impact, emphasizing the need for differentiated strategies based on ESG commitment levels.
Lately, there is a progressive assimilation of sustainable and green development principles into the collective conscience of individuals. Companies have received considerable attention from all sectors of life when it comes to the environment, society and governance (ESG). This study uses a bidirectional fixed effects model to investigate the influence and the mechanism of green innovation on company ESG information, using a research sample composed of data from the A-share listed companies in China spanning the period from 2011 to 2021. The findings indicated that green innovation exerted a substantial positive influence on ESG information disclosure, and the effect was more substantial, especially in mature and declining companies. Financing constraints and analysts’ attention played a mediating role between green innovation and ESG information disclosure. The results of heterogeneity analysis showed that green innovation played a more significant role in promoting ESG information disclosure among state-owned companies, large-scale companies, manufacturing companies and heavy pollution companies. Furthermore, implementing green development policies had facilitated the reinforcement of the promotion impact of ESG information disclosure through green innovation. Additionally, the instrumental variable method was employed to conduct a robustness test. This study enhances the understanding of the theoretical framework about green innovation and the disclosure of ESG information, and offers valuable insights for advancing the sustainable development of companies.
An important element in dealing with HIV/AIDS is to disclose of its status to others. One of the problems faced by HIV/AIDS sufferers in disclosing their status is finding people they can trust, who can keep information about their HIV/AIDS status and not divulge it to other parties without their permission. Not many people can accept them without prejudice and stigma. This article discusses the communication efforts carried out by female AIDS activists in the community as co-owners who receive information from people with HIV/AIDS and subsequently become confidants and assist them in medical and psychological and social aspects. This study used a qualitative method. Data was collected through in-depth interviews with 9 Community AIDS activist women from 7 regions. The results of the study reveal the process of housewives transforming into community AIDS activists, how they get personal information about the status of HIV/AIDS and eventually become co-owners of information who eventually become confidants, have responsibilities and help people with HIV/AIDS in health, psychological and social aspects.
Nowadays investors are measuring the performances of a business organization not only based on their operating efficiency but also fulfilling their social responsibility. At least the investors need to know whether the activities of the business have any adverse impact on the society and environment. This study explores the accountability of the business from the social and environmental context. This empirical study tends to investigate the nature of the ownership structure that influences the environmental disclosure of a business entity. Based on the sample of fifty-five DSE-listed textile companies, this study used multiple regression to assess the causal relationship between the ownership structure and corporate environmental disclosure. Moreover, this cross-sectional study also considers the agency theory and stakeholder theory to explain the relationship between the ownership structure and environmental disclosure. The findings indicate that corporate environmental disclosure is positively influenced by foreign ownership and institutional ownership whereas director ownership and public ownership have no significant association with the environmental disclosure. These insightful results challenge conventional assumptions and highlight the need for a nuanced understanding of the factors that drive environmental reporting practices in the context of an emerging economy. The main contribution of this article lies in its provision of empirical evidence from an emerging economy, Bangladesh, which helps in understanding sustainable practices in a global context. Additionally, it aids in developing effective corporate governance policies and strategies tailored to similar emerging economies by recognizing the role of ownership structures in influencing environmental accountability. These findings further assist policymakers, managers, and other sustainability advocates in understanding how different ownership structures affect corporate environmental disclosure.
