Stress has evolutionary roots that help human beings evolve and survive. Existing workplace mental health models typically view stress as the direct cause of poor mental health. Such models focus on strategies to eliminate it. Guided by O’Connor and Kirtley’s integrated motivational-volitional (IMV) model, we posit that demanding jobs and high-stress environments do not directly impact an individual’s mental health but trigger a “sense of self” moderator (SSM), which then leads to mental health outcomes. This moderator is modified by the workplace’s organizational design and individual’s traits. We propose a Workplace Mental Health (WMH) Model, which suggests that by addressing these SSM modifiers through evidence-based interventions at organizational and individual levels, even in high-stress environments, organizations can have mentally healthy workforces and build high-performance workplaces. This paper assumes that stress is an inalienable part of any work environment and that a secular reduction in stress levels in modern society is infeasible. Although some individuals in high-stress job environments develop mental illness, many do not, and some even thrive. This differential response suggests that stress may act as a trigger, but an individual’s reaction to it is influenced more by other factors than the stress itself.
The aim of this paper is to consider the mental and physical wellbeing of employees through a lean-inspired People Value Stream lens. Poor well-being is a major cause of reduced productivity for organisations and a drain on healthcare services. We develop a conceptual approach as to how the interrelated spheres of mental and physical health might be dramatically improved through the lean, proactive intervention of employees. This requires the creation of a self-reliant wellness approach by focusing on an individual's meaning and goals and their consequent overall wellness and motivation. This involves assessing their mental and physical ‘flow’ during their career and how individuals can take control of their own wellbeing with the support of their team and wider organisation. Attention to this flow will help employees achieve what they want more quickly and effectively, with consequent benefits to their team and the organisation. We show how this can be achieved from a conceptual point of view and with a practical example. This is the first flow to be considered in detail within the People Value Stream approach. This provides a framework to completely rethink mental and physical wellbeing from the viewpoint of the individual rather than the organisation.
The failure to achieve sustainable development in South Africa is due to the inability to deliver quality and adequate health services that would lead to the achievement of sustainable human security. As we live in an era of digital technology, Machine Learning (ML) has not yet permeated the healthcare sector in South Africa. Its effects on promoting quality health services for sustainable human security have not attracted much academic attention in South Africa and across the African continent. Hospitals still face numerous challenges that have hindered achieving adequate health services. For this reason, the healthcare sector in South Africa continues to suffer from numerous challenges, including inadequate finances, poor governance, long waiting times, shortages of medical staff, and poor medical record keeping. These challenges have affected health services provision and thus pose threats to the achievement of sustainable security. The paper found that ML technology enables adequate health services that alleviate disease burden and thus lead to sustainable human security. It speeds up medical treatment, enabling medical workers to deliver health services accurately and reducing the financial cost of medical treatments. ML assists in the prevention of pandemic outbreaks and as well as monitoring their potential epidemic outbreaks. It protects and keeps medical records and makes them readily available when patients visit any hospital. The paper used a qualitative research design that used an exploratory approach to collect and analyse data.
This study explores relationships of prosocial rule-breaking (PSRB) on employee well-being in the hospitality industry. The study integrates the dynamics such as employee engagement as a mediator, emotional intelligence, and job autonomy as moderating variables. It offers insights into complex dynamics shaping employee behavior and well-being of hospitality industry. The data was collected through structured questionnaire form hospitality sector. The results showed significant positive relations between PSRB, employee engagement, and well-being. Emotional intelligence appeared as a moderator, escalating the relationship between PSRB and employee engagement. Job autonomy also escalating the relationship as moderator between employee engagement and well-being.
This study is about the influence of ethical leadership in both employees wellbeing and employee performance in Egypt’s tourism industry. Besides, it examines the indirect effect of ethical leadership on performance through its influence on the well-being of employees. The research was based on a quantitative research method and the surveys were self-administered, distributed and collected from a random sample of the employees of the Tourism companies. Analysis of 515 valid responses using structural equation modeling (SEM) unveiled several key findings: Ethical leadership is the main reason why both employee well-being and performance are significantly increased, and the fact that employee well-being is also the main reason for the improvement of performance. In addition, the employee well-being plays the role of the bridge between the ethical leadership and the performance. These insights are of great help for the decision-makers in the crafting of the effective leadership strategies that will lead to the creation of the thriving and high-performed work environments in Egyptian tourism sector.
