Innovative frontiers: Post-quantum perspectives in healthcare and medical imaging

The growth of computer power is crucial for the development of contemporary information technologies. Artificial intelligence is a powerful instrument for every aspect of contemporary science, the economy, and society as a whole. Further growth in computing potential opens new prospects for biomedicine and healthcare. The promising works on quantum computing make it possible to increase computing power exponentially. While conventional computing relies on the formula with 2ⁿ bits, the simplified vision of quantum computer power is 2^N, where N is a number of logical qubits. With thousandfold or more improvements in computing performance, there will be realistic options for quick protein, genes and other organic molecules 3D fold discoveries, empowering pharmaceutics and biomedical research. Personalized blockchain-based healthcare will become a reality. Medical imaging and instant healthcare data analysis will significantly speed up diagnostics and treatment control. Biomedical digital twin usage will give useful tools to any healthcare practitioner, with options for intraoperative AR and VR micro-manipulations. Nanoscale intrabody bots will be instantly customized and AI-controlled. The smart environment will be enriched with multiple sensors and actuators, giving real control of the air, water, food, and physical health factors. All these possibilities are quickly achievable only in the case of realistic quantum computing options. Even with the ability to reach this stage, there will be questions for the stability of post-quantum society: privacy, ethical issues, and quantum computing control uncertainty. General solutions to these queries will give clues for post-quantum healthcare.

Age-inclusive urban design: A review of sustainable retrofit strategies for elderly well-being

As urban populations age, creating cities that cater to the needs of elderly residents becomes increasingly vital. This paper addresses the imperative to develop urban environments supporting the well-being of the elderly against a backdrop of changing demographics. With the proportion of elderly individuals steadily rising, the demand for age-inclusive urban design is more pressing than ever. The research question driving this study is: How can sustainable retrofit strategies contribute to age-inclusive urban design, considering the physiological and psychological characteristics of the elderly? Begins with examining the theoretical foundations of sustainable retrofit practices, shedding light on their significance and common objectives. Shortcomings in current urban retrofit practices are scrutinized, highlighting the gaps that need addressing. Integrating research on the physiological and psychological characteristics of the elderly, along with their distinct needs in outdoor environments, the review contributes to a nuanced understanding of age-specific urban requirements. A bespoke sustainable urban retrofit strategy for the elderly is conceptualized, rooted in the principles of urban design. Finally, acknowledging the challenges faced in achieving age-inclusive urban spaces and provides forward-looking recommendations.

A disaster resilience-based approach for sustainable development: An example for managing the COVID-19 pandemic

This paper provides a disaster resilience-based approach. For the definition of the approach, a three-step method (definition of components, analysis of the resilience pillars and definitions of resilience-based actions) has been followed. To validate the approach, an application scenario for mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic is provided in the paper. The proposed approach contributes to stimulating the co-responsibility quadruple helix of actors in the implementation of actions for disaster management. Moreover, the approach is adaptable and flexible, as it can be used to manage different kinds of disasters, adjusting or changing itself to meet specific needs.

A comparison of subjective well-being between urban and rural elderly in China: Differences and influences

Background: Among urban and rural elderly in China, comprehensive contextual factors of subjective well-being (SWB) have not yet been investigated systematically. Using a large and representative sample of Chinese elderly people, this study explored the predictors of SWB. As outlined in Andersen’s behavioral model, predictors can be classified as predisposing, enabling, needing, and health factors. Methods: The Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) is a nationwide, community-based and cross-sectional study conducted between 2003 and 2022. This study used data from 2018. There were 4415 participants aged over 60, including 1763 urban residents and 2652 rural residents. The SWB was measured on a five-point Likert scale ranging from very unhappy to very happy. Estimating potential predictors on SWB was accomplished by using ordinal logistic regression models in the generalized linear method. Results: In China, the SWB of urban and rural elderly has greatly improved, and the gap between them has narrowed significantly. Those with spouses, pensions, higher incomes, better self-reported health, and more social activities have better SWB. In the urban elderly, SWB is primarily determined by enabling factors such as personal income, while in the rural elderly, it is primarily determined by need factors such as social participation. Conclusions: A variety of factors influence SWB among the elderly. An emphasis should be placed on helping widowed elderly people, those without pension insurance, those with low incomes, and those less involved in social activities. Leisure activities, financial support, social security, and medical services can all be improved to promote the SWB of older people.

There are a number of issues that can influence elderly life satisfaction, which can mirror their welfare. This study aims to explore the differences in elderly parents’ life satisfaction across socioeconomic characteristics and investigates how the traits of both children and parents associate with elderly parents’ life satisfaction in Thailand. This study uses individual data obtained from Thailand’s National Statistical Organization covering 2008–2015, 2018 and 2020, with a total sample size of 28,494. To investigate the association between children’s and parents’ characteristics, particularly formal education and parental life satisfaction, this study uses ordered logistic regression for the analysis. Our results show that male parents are more likely to have higher life satisfaction than their female counterparts. Parents who are employed, holding a bachelor’s degree, and living with female children are more satisfied with their life. Statistically, children’s formal education demonstrates its importance for their elderly parents’ life satisfaction. This documents the vital role of schooling in improving parental life satisfaction. Moreover, facing the challenge of entering an aging society, government agencies must take a proactive stance on creating jobs suitable for the elderly or retirees to maintain their sense of independence. The evidence of intergenerational mobility reaffirms the importance of children’s education along with their caring ability, which should be strengthened.
